The goal of any search engine is to serve it's users the best results for the requested keywords. Every change they make to the search algorithms is geared towards this goal. So if you create a site that's useful for people, most likely a search engine will value it as such and your site will be ranked higher.
Now this doesn't mean you don't have to do anything to get high rankings. In the end, a search engine is only a computer program running some algorithms on some text (your content and HTML) you've written. If a search engine can't understand your text, you're not likely to get a good ranking.
