Accessibility and Search Engine Ranking

Stephen Ibbotson - June 01, 2008
Search engine optimization is a very important area of web development in today's world. Being at the top of a search engine is what every business wants. Does accessibility of a website affect the position it is on a search engine and how important is it to have a site accessible?

Firstly we have to look into how search engines work in order to come to some conclusion about whether or not they include accessibility in there ranking. Search engines use robots to search the web and index sites according to the content found in that site. They use algorithms to decide what position a website would be on there ranking. So is accessibility of a website part of their algorithm?

Certain aspects are obviously part of the algorithm. For instance seperating the content from the design so that screen readers can more easiely read a page also makes it easier for robots to read the page, therefore increasing the position. However certain aspects dont increase the position of a website, including having a website scalable and been able to increase the text size.

Search engines should start to favour website that are accessible in order to make the internet a easier source for people with disabilities. About the author
